Chapter 32, Problem 1CT
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The ways in which creatine supplements are beneficial to people with muscular dystrophy.
Introduction:
A mature skeletal muscle consists of thousands of muscle fibers which are known as myofibrils. These are threadlike proteins which are arranged in the identical contractile units, called sarcomere. The thick filament of the sarcomere has a motor protein which is called myosin, and the thin filament has actin as a motor protein.

In order to study and understand muscle diseases, one needs to have a good understanding of normal muscle function.
Briefly outline the process of cross-bridge cycling in muscle contraction.
Be sure to highlight the role of Ca2+ and ATP/ADP in the process.
As lactate and other substances accumulate in an active muscle, they stimulate pain receptors and the muscle may feel sore. How might the application of heat or substances that dilate blood vessels relieve such soreness?
Which of the following is thought to be cause of muscular fatigue?

- Men are generally stronger than women because they typically have larger bodies, and a more significant proportion of their total body mass is made up of muscle. However, when strength is expressed per unit of the cross-sectional area of muscle tissue, men are only 1-2% stronger than women in the upper body and equal to women in the lower body. - A friend who was involved in an accident is wearing a leg cast. Describe the condition that will occur without exercise. How can you prevent this condition?arrow_forward1) Paula is a scientist who is developing a drug called Fremtol that will be used to treat muscle spasms. This drug acts on specific skeletal muscles to (1) block the release of Ca2+ ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, (2) inhibit the pivoting ability of the myosin heads of the thick filaments, and (3) block the production of ATP by the mitochondria in skeletal muscles. By using this drug, contraction of certain skeletal muscle fibers is reduced, which keeps those muscles from producing spasms. In the above scenario, Fremtol’s effect of blocking the pivoting ability of the myosin heads of the thick filaments would have which of the following consequences? a. decreased release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction b. inhibition of the power stroke c. reduced production of myoglobin d. All of the above e. None of the above 2) Paula is a scientist who is developing a drug called Fremtol that will be used to treat muscle spasms. There can be measurable differences in muscle strength, endurance, range of motion, coordination, elasticity, and flexibility of connective tissue. Regular exercise is necessary to prevent a decrease in muscle strength. Exercise helps to strengthen muscles and keeps joints, tendons, and ligaments more flexible, allowing for a more active lifestyle.
