Summary Introduction
Each plant species alternates among two multicellular forms, which includes a haploid gametophyte generation (makes gametes) and a diploid sporophyte generation (makes spores). One of the major events in the sporophyte generation is the evolution of xylem and phloem. Xylem transports dissolved nutrients and water, whereas phloem transports carbohydrates generated by photosynthesis.
