Chapter 31.2, Problem 1CC
Summary Introduction
To differentiate: Life cycles of
Concept introduction:
Many plants, animals, and fungi reproduce by sexual reproduction. Sexual life cycle involve an alternation between meiosis and fertilization. In meiosis, the diploid cell gives rise to a haploid cell and two haploid cells (gametes) fuse to form a diploid zygote (fertilization). There are three main categories of sexual life cycle: diploid-dominant, haploid-dominant, and alternation of generations.

The figure below shows the life cycle of the fungus Neurospora. The adult stage of the Neurospora is a multicellular haploid.
a) Between which two stages of the Neurospora life cycle (shown above) do most mitotic cell division o
Alternation of generations means
-One phase of the life cycle is photosynthetic and the other is heterotrophic.
-One phase of the life cycle is unicellular and the other is multicellular.
-One phase of the life cycle takes place on land and the other in water.
-One phase of the life cycle is multicellular diploid and the other is multicellular haploid.
-One phase of the life cycle is motile and the other is stationary.
In a life cycle with alternation of generations, multicellularhaploid forms alternate with(A) unicellular haploid forms.(B) unicellular diploid forms.(C) multicellular haploid forms.(D) multicellular diploid forms.

- When the Ascomycetes fungus reproduces sexually, mating type A fungi cross fertilize mating type a fungi. The resulting zygotes undergo meiotic and then mitotic division to produce asci with eight ascospores. The ascospores in the asci are ordered and reflect the position of the parental nuclei in the zygote. Use the passage to answer the question. Although ascospores are produced by mitotic division, none of the spores develop into fungi that are identical to either parental hyphae. What is the BEST explanation for this observation? A.
