Introduction:

Informed consent is required to allow study participants to understand the risks, benefits, and duration of the research. Children are often too young to give consent or understand each element of the study, in these cases, parents may be consulted and give consent for their children. Another problematic group is people with profound special needs who may have difficulty communicating and/or understanding the purposes of the research and their role in it. If there is no guardian to consent on their behalf, great care must be taken to try and explain each step of the process and limit any negative consequences.
