The orbitals that overlap to form the bonds in a molecule depend on the hybridization of the central atoms. End-on overlap of hybrid orbitals leads to formation of σ bond, and sideways overlap leads to the formation of π bond. Hydrogen has only an s orbital and does not undergo hybridization.
