Explanation of Solution

It is an accepted ideology that managers have a major influence over organizational performance. Nevertheless, one could argue that managers cannot be held solely responsible for performance. There might be external factors over which they have no control. Experts suggest two standpoints that describe the two views aforesaid. The omnipotent view suggests that managers are the ones directly responsible for organizational performance. They are expected to take charge of every element that impacts upon the organization be it internal or external. Being in line with this view, managers are seen as heroes at good times and are given all the credit for positive outcomes.

On the contrary, during times of hardships, the managers are the ones held responsible no matter what the circumstances are. On the other hand, the symbolic view suggests that the extent of a manager’s ability to impact upon organizational performance is affected by external factors. Economic conditions, political climate, actions of competitors are some examples of such external factors.
