Introduction
Positive aspects of study-abroad programs for socialization include broadening horizons and introducing new perspectives. Cost is a limiting factor for many students, and the Americans who use these programs are not a very diverse group. Nothing can truly replace living in a different country for global socialization, but webinars or virtual working groups online may help.
Explanation of Solution
Answer and explanation
Studying abroad is a great way to really understand perspectives held by citizens of different countries. By living among them for a few weeks or more, Americans can better understand conditions that may influence diverse beliefs and values of other societies. One of the limitations of this approach is the cost. While some programs offer subsidies or scholarships, there are often additional costs of living abroad that are out of reach for many students. Those who do attend are most frequently white (76%) and female (65%), making the cohort of students in these programs not very diverse. A student who is unable to study abroad may benefit from online collaboration with people from around the world to enhance their global socialization. This would not really replace the experience of living in a different culture for an extended time.
