According to the endosymbiotic theory, mitochondria arose as a result of endocytosis of aerobic bacteria, and chloroplasts arose as a result of endocytosis of photosynthetic bacteria, and the subsequent infoldings of membranes lead to the origin of other internal membranes. These different bacteria evolved to a point where they developed a symbiotic relationship with one another and then evolved into eukaryotic cells. Thus, the endosymbiotic theory explains the origin of mitochondria, chloroplasts and other internal membranes of a eukaryotic cell.
