- The author used the coplas for the same reasons as people from the medieval times used it. It tells about people and their daily lifes and it is short and easy to memorize. It does convey the message very clearly to those who live near the border and to the rest of the world.
- Poverty and wealth divide both sides. Unfortunately, countries in the south are very poor compared to the United States and Canada. The result of this divide comes discrimination.
- The whole poem reflects her life experience not just elements. The border, freedom, the bridge and the people from the two Californias are the main elements of ther copla. This has come through her own life experience in the US and Mexico.
