Chapter 29.2, Problem 1TC
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The factors that contribute to the differences in primary production among ecosystems.

Introduction:

Ecosystem is composed of abiotic and biotic components which interact with each other for their survival. Ecosystem is organized into various trophic levels, through which nutrients and energy is transferred from one trophic level to another. An ecosystem’s contribution to Earth’s total production is determined by both by the ecosystem’s production per unit area and by the portion of Earth that the ecosystem covers.

Why does primary productivity vary in different ecosystems?
Which of the following statements BEST describes energy transfer in an ecosystem? A. If the primary producer has 175,000 kcal available, the secondary consumer will receive 17,500 kcal from the primary consumer. B. If the primary consumer has 175,000 kcal available, the secondary consumer will receive 17,500 kcal from the primary consumer. C. If the primary consumer has 175,000 kcal available, the tertiary consumer will receive 175 kcal from the secondary consumer. D. If the primary producer has 175,000 kcal available, the tertiary consumer will receive 17,500 kcal from the secondary consumer.
What is the formula for net primary production (NPP)? How does NPP relate to energy pyramids?
