The kidney has two zones- renal cortex and renal medulla. Renal cortex is the outer region of kidney and contains blood vessels connected to nephrons. Renal medulla is the inner part of the kidney containing 8-12 renal pyramids consisting of collecting tubules. The major structural difference between cortex and medulla is that renal cortex is a smooth continuous layer and renal medulla consists of renal pyramids.
