The two major categories of loads affecting buildings.
Answer to Problem 29.1Q
Gravity loads and lateral loads are loads affecting buildings.
Explanation of Solution
Major categories of loads that affect buildings:
- Gravity loads
- Lateral loads
- Temporary loads
- Moving loads
- Uplift loads
The gravity loads on each structure cause a downward movement. Gravity loads include dead loads, live loads and dynamic loads.Due to the complexity of calculating such loads accurately, building codes include tables of conventional safe loads which may help in determining the amount of stressor weight which acton each given member.
Lateral loads are live loads applied parallel to the ground. They are forces acting in the horizontal direction on a structure. For example, wind load. They vary from gravity loads which aredownward, vertical forces.
