Explanation of Solution
The zygote is produced by the fusion of the male and the female gametes. During the formation of the zygote, the male only contributes the genetic material present in the nucleus. Rest of the cytoplasmic organelles and the structures comes from the ovum only. The mitochondria present in the body of the zygote come from the maternal body. Hence, the mitochondrial genome is inherited from the females only. That is why, the traits coded by the mitochondrial genomes is always similar to the mother.
In an offspring, the females contribute to the mitochondrial gene and other cytoplasmic structures.
