Chapter 27, Problem 32PP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Draw the condensation polymer when 1, 4-cyclohexanediol is treated with phosgene.

Concept introduction:

Polymers can be distinguished based on the mode of polymerization as addition polymer and condensation polymer.  Addition polymer is said to be formed when the monomer has a unsaturated bond and it takes place in forming polymer.  Condensation polymer is said to be formed when the monomers undergo condensation reaction with a loss of small molecules like water, carbon dioxide etc.  Few examples of condensation polymerization are,

  • Acid +alcohol=polyester
  • Acid+amine=polyamide
  • Alcohol+phosgene=polycarbonate
  • Alcohol+isocyanate=polycarbamate

To draw: the condensation polymer formed when 1,4-cyclohexanediol is treated with phosgene.

What would be the best choices for the missing reagents 1 and 3 in this synthesis? 1. PPh3 3 2. n-BuLi • Draw the missing reagents in the drawing area below. You can draw them in any arrangement you like. • Do not draw the missing reagent 2. If you draw 1 correctly, we'll know what it is. • Note: if one of your reagents needs to contain a halogen, use bromine. Click and drag to start drawing a structure.
