RNA stands for ribonucleic acid. The four complementary bases of RNA are adenine (A), uracil (U), guanine (G) and cytosine (C). Ribonucleic acid (RNA) is responsible for the synthesis of the molecules that carry out essential cellular functions. There are five types of RNA molecules: heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA), messenger RNA (mRNA), small nuclear RNA (snRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and transfer RNA (tRNA).
