Concept explainers
A charged particle moves through a region containing only a magnetic field. Under what condition will it experience no force?
The condition when an electron will not experience a force in a magnetic field.
Answer to Problem 1FTD
An electron will not experience any force in a magnetic field when the particle is moving either parallel or antiparallel to the direction of field.
Explanation of Solution
Write the equation to find the force acting on a particle in magnetic field.
Here,
The force becomes zero when the sine term becomes zero. For sine term to be zero the angle
Therefore the force acting on a particle becomes zero only when the particle is moving parallel or antiparallel to the direction of magnetic field.
Conclusion:
Therefore, an electron will not experience any force in a magnetic field when the particle is moving either parallel or antiparallel to the direction of field.

- A 1.00-kg ball having net charge Q = 5.00 C is thrown out of a window horizontally at a speed v = 20.0 m/s. The window is at a height h = 20.0 m above the ground. A uniform horizontal magnetic field of magnitude B = 0.010 0 T is perpendicular to the plane of the balls trajectory. Find the magnitude of the magnetic force acting on the ball just before it hits the ground.
