Chapter 25.1, Problem 1QC
Summary Introduction
To explain: The three principal classifications of CHD.
Concept introduction: Congenital heart disease is the most common cardiovascular disease in children. Different types of congenital heart defects that are present in the disease can range from simple conditions that do not cause any symptoms to complex problems which cause severing threatening symptoms.
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
Congenital heart diseases are heart abnormalities which are present at birth. CHD will affect the heart walls, heart valves, and the blood vessels. There are different types of congenital heart disease and can be divided into three main categories:
- In the heart valve defects, the valves present inside the heart which directs the blood flow will close or leak. This will interfere with the ability of heart to pump blood directly.
- In the heart wall defects, the walls present between the left and right sides of upper and lower chambers of heart will not grow correctly. This will cause blood to back up in the heart or buildup in the places where it does not belong. This defect will put pressure in the heart to work more and cause high blood pressure.
- In blood vessel defects, the veins and arteries which carry the blood to heart and back out of the body will not function properly. This will decrease or block the blood flow that leads to many health complications.
