Chapter 25, Problem F25.1A
Summary Introduction

To identify:

The different parts of the neuron.

Introduction:

Neurons are the basic unit of the central nervous system. These cells are the main sites for the transmission of the signals from the receptor to the effector cells. There are different types of neurons based on their signal transmission. The two neurons are sensory neuron that receives the signals and the motor neuron that transmits the signals in response to the impulse.

Fig 1: Neuron

The nucleus is present in the cell body that comprises the genetic material in it. The nucleolus might be involved in the biogenesis of the ribosomes; it is also responsible for the growth of the neurons. The portion of the neuron cell where the myelin sheath is not present in known as Nodes of Ranvier. These sites are involved in electrical impulses in the neurons. Myelin sheath is the covering present on the axon. The covering usually protects the nerves by acting as the electrical insulator. It also prevents the depolarization of the neuron. The signal is first received by the dendritic branches. The surface of the branches contains certain receptors that further transmit the signals. The neuron contains the cell body that is comprised of cell organelles along with the nucleus.

Conclusion

The image indicates the different parts in a neuron; they are cell body, nucleus, nucleolus, dendritic branches, and myelin sheath.
