Chapter 25, Problem 2AAATB
Summary Introduction

To write:

The process to induce poinsettia to bloom during the summer.

Introduction:

A biological response that is bound to a change in the proportion of light and dark within a 24-hour cycle called Photoperiodism. Poinsettia belongs to a short-day plant because it will not flower if day length surpasses a critical value. Short-day plants tend to bloom when day length is short. Poinsettia flower in the month of December. Long-day plants bloom only if day length is longer than a critical value. Long-day and short-day plants are actually reacting to the concentrations of two forms of a protein called phytochrome.

A short-day plant flowers only when exposed to light for less than 12 hours long. Which of the following would cause the plant to flower? * O a 13-hour night and 11-hour day with 1 minute of darkness after 6 hours a 12-hour day and 12-hour night with a flash of red light an 8-hour day and 16-hour night with a flash of white light after 8 hours O a 9-hour night and 15-hour day with 1 minute of darkness after 7 hours 24 hours of continuous light
Predict whether flowering in a short day plant with a minimum critical length of 14 hours would be expected to occur in the following situations. The plant is exposed to 15 hours of daylight and 9 hours of darkness uninterrupted. The plant is exposed to 9 hours of daylight and 15 hours of darkness. The plant is exposed to 9 hours of daylight and 15 hours of darkness, with 10 minutes exposure to red light in the middle of the night.
In the Kotukutuku plant, Fuchsia excortiata, why do pollinated flowers remain attached to the plant for several days after pollination occurs and nectar is no longer produced Size of flower and pollination Annual versus perennial reproduction Time and expense to grow the pollen tube outweighs the cost of maintaining the flower on the tree Size of flower and number of flowers on inflorescence
