Where are interstitial cells located? What is their function?
To review:
The location and function of the interstitial cells.
Introduction:
The primary sex organs of the human male are the sperm-producing testes. They are located in the scrotum. The cross-section of a mature testis displays several seminiferous tubules that are separated by areolar connective tissue from each other. The primary cells that are involved in the production of spermatozoa are housed inside the seminiferous tubules.
Explanation of Solution
Interstitial cells, also called the Leydig cells, are arranged in clusters between the seminiferous tubules. They are polygonal or spherical in shape with an ovoid nucleus. Their cytoplasm is basic in nature and contains large quantities of smooth endoplasmic reticulum along with large quantities of membrane-bound lipid droplets. Numerous mitochondria are also present in their cytoplasm.
The main function of the interstitial cells is the secretion of male sex hormones called androgens, especially, testosterone. Testosterone is an important hormone in the development of male sexual characteristics as all male genitalia will start to atrophy in the absence of this hormone. Testosterone secretion is regulated by luteinizing hormone from the anterior pituitary. The luteinizing hormone imposes its effects on the entire male reproductive system by controlling the secretion of testosterone.
