Interpretation: The moderator and its function in a nuclear reactor have to be explained.
Concept Introduction:
All nuclear reactors are devices designed to maintain a chain reaction producing a steady flow of neutrons generated by the fission of heavy nuclei. Moderation is the process of the reduction of the initial high speed of the neutron. Since energy is conserved, this reduction of the neutron speed takes place by transfer of energy to a material is called a moderator.
