It seems that no less than a small fraction of the subsurface biosphere is autonomous of surface conditions—in other words, there are microorganisms residing underground today that would possibly continue to thrive yet if the Sun were to go out, and the photosynthesis being shut down, tomorrow. This is untrue for a great pact of subsurface life, a lot of which directly or circuitously depends on the energy yielded from sunlight at Earth’s surface—for example,as it depends on the natural molecules produced by photosynthesis, or it depends on the oxidized molecules obtained from the oxygen liberated by photosynthesis. However, it appears that some micro-organisms like those which make their living by uniting hydrogen (generated from reaction between weathering rocks andsubsurface water) with dissolved carbon dioxide, might really stand for ecosystems that are not dependent of the surface. So long liquid water would exist in Earth’s interior and such will be the case so long there is availability of enough internal geothermal heating to maintain some layer in Earth’s rocks in which liquid water exists—it appears likely that there would be a subsurface biosphere. The elucidation of subsurface biosphere of Earth changes the way that is generally thought about the prospects for lifesomewhere else. If deep biospheres are feasible, even in the visage of harsh surface conditions, then the possibility for subsurface life on Europa,Mars, or elsewhere seemsbigger. But it must be remembered that the necessities for habitability are not essentially the same as the requirements for the source of life. On Mars, it is in any case possible that life initiated at the surface, where it could make use of the tremendous available energy, and then drifted to the subsurface as the face became a freeze-dried desert. For Jupiter’s moon Europa, which most likely harbors a subsurface marine of liquid water, it appears unlikely that there were warm surface conditionsin excess of a fleeting moment, even if that, early in the solar system history...
