Chapter 23.1, Problem 1QC
Summary Introduction

To describe: The reason why the two separate circulatory systems are said to be “serially connected”.

Concept introduction: A system that consists of vast network of vessels and organs for the transportation of blood, oxygen, and other nutrients throughout the body is called as circulatory system. Heart is the most important organ of the circulatory system. It is a muscular organ that pumps the oxygenated blood to every part of the body. Along with the supply of oxygen and nutrients, it also assists in the removal of metabolic wastes.

Explanation of Solution

The blood is circulated within the body through two separate circulatory pump systems namely-systemic circulation and pulmonary circulation. The pulmonary system consists of the structures that are present on the right side, or the right heart; helps to pump blood through lungs. The systemic circulation consists of structures on the left side, or the left heart responsible for pumping blood throughout the body except the lungs. Both pumping systems are separated but are serially connected to allow a continual circulation through the heart, blood vessels, and the lymphatic vessels. They are connected in such a way that the output of one system becomes the input of the other systems. This is the reason why the two separate circulatory systems are said to be “serially connected”.
