Interpretation:

The effect of carnitine deficiency on $\text{β-oxidation}$ has to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

$\text{β-oxidation}$ is defined as the degradation of fatty acid into two-carbon acetyl-CoA. In each cycle of $\text{β-oxidation}$, one fatty acid is converted to acetyl CoA and an acyl derivative of fatty acid with lesser carbon atoms.

After the activation, the fatty acid needs to be transferred to the mitochondrial matrix so that it can be oxidized.
