Optical activity of biological molecules. Many biologically important molecules are optically active. When linearly polarized light traverses a solution of compounds containing these molecules, its plane of polarization is rotated. Some compounds rotate the polarization clockwise: others rotate the polarization counterclockwise. The amount of rotation depends on the amount of material in the path of the light. The following data give the amount of rotation through two amino acids over a path length of 100 cm:
Rotation (degrees) | Concentration (g/10C mL) | |
l-leucine | d-glutamic acid |
|
−0.11 | 0.124 | 1.0 |
minus;0.22 | 0.248 | 2.0 |
−0.55 | 0.520 | 5.0 |
−1.10 | 1.24 | 10.0 |
−2.20 | 2.48 | 20.0 |
−5.50 | 6.20 | 50.0 |
−11.0 | 12.4 | 100.0 |
From these data find the relationship between the concentration C (in grams per 100 mL) and the rotation of the polarization (in degrees) of each amino acid. (Hint: Graph the concentration as a function of the rotation angle for each amino acid.)

The reflected and refracted rays are perpendicular to each other. Find the angle of incidence. This angle is called Brewsters angle or the polarizing angle. In this situation, the reflected light is linearly polarized, with its electric field restricted to be perpendicular to the plane containing the rays and the normal.arrow_forward
- What angle is needed between the direction of polarized light and the axis of a polarizing filter to cut its intensity in half?arrow_forwardA non-polarized light goes through 2 polarizing filters. The angle between the directions of polarization of the two filters is 60°. By which factor is the light intensity divided When the light goes through the first polarizer?arrow_forwardPolarised light is incident on crossed polarisers (i.e. polarisers with perpendicular polarisation axes). The first polariser the light encounters is aligned with the light polarisation. A third polariser is inserted between the crossed polarisers, with its polarisation axis rotated by 0.28 radians relative to the first polariser. What is the percentage of light intensity transmitted through all three polarisers?arrow_forward
- The ground spider Drassodes cupreus like many spiders, has several pairs of eyes. It has been discovered that one of these pairs of eyes acts as a set of polarization filters with one eye's polarization direction oriented at 90° to the other eye's polarization direction. In addition, experiments show that the spider uses these eyes to aid in navigating to and from its burrow. Explain how such eyes might aid navigation.arrow_forwardA beam of light is passed through a first linear polarizing filter. A second polarizing filter is placed after the first one. When its polarizing axis is rotated by 0 = 36 degrees with respect to the first filter, the light intensity decreases as compared to when = 0. What is the ratio of the light intensity after rotating the second polarizer to the intensity when 0 = 0? Give your answer in decimal form. The first filter has its transmission axis pointing up. The second filter has its transmission axis rotated 30° Clockwise from the vertical. The third filter has its transmission axis rotated 60° Clockwise from the vertical. And the fourth filter has its transmission axis rotated 90° Clockwise from the vertical. a) What percentage of the unpolarized light intensity gets through the stack of 4 filters? b) The first and fourth filters are now swapped. - Unpolarized light passes through two ideal Polaroid sheets. The axis of the first is vertical and the axis of the second is at 40.0° to the vertical. What fraction of the incident light is transmitted? Three polarizing plates whose planes are parallel are centered on a common axis. The directions of the transmission axes relative to the common vertical direction are shown in the figure below. A linearly polarized beam of light with plane of polarization parallel to the vertical reference direction is incident from the left onto the first disk with intensity I₁ = = 11.0 units (arbitrary). Calculate the transmitted intensity I, when 0₁ = 21.0°, 0₂ = 41.0°, and 03 = 59.0°.
