The ovarian cycle (follicle maturation) regulates the development of endocrine tissues of the ovaries and release of eggs; whereas, the menstrual cycle directs the development and maintenance of the lining of the uterine wall. The follicular phase (proliferative phase) occurs during the first half of the menstrual cycle in humans and facilitates the maturation of ovarian follicles, completing ovulation.
