Concept explainers
Concept introduction: Behavior is defined as “a predictable response to external stimuli.” Behavioral patterns displayed by animals can be either inborn (fixed) or learned. Fixed behaviors are displayed since birth and initiated in response to simple external stimuli. Learned behaviors are responses based on past experiences of the animal, and allows them behave flexibly to their surroundings.

Answer to Problem 1SQ
Correct answer: “Behavior enables animals to respond quickly to changes in their environment”. Therefore, option d. is correct answer.
Explanation of Solution
Reason for the correct statement:
Behavior enables animals to give responses like realizing the presence of predator in the niche, the change in seasons, climate so they migrate or hibernate accordingly, coordinate activities within their community like the bees and the wolves, to find food, water, and shelter and for parental care.
Option d. is given as “enables animals to respond quickly to changes in their environment”. As, “Behavior enables animals to respond quickly to changes in their environment”, option d. is the correct answer
Reasons for the incorrect statements:
Option a. is given as “is seen in vertebrates, but not in invertebrates”.
Behavior is observed in both vertebrates and invertebrates. So, option a. is incorrect.
Option b. is given as “always involves communication”.
Behavior does not involve communication alone. It involves finding basic survival needs like food, water and shelter and also adapt to changing environmental conditions. So option b. is incorrect.
Option c. is given as “enables animals to evolve”.
Behavior has no role in evolution. So, option c. is incorrect.
Hence, options a., b., and c. are incorrect.
