Chapter 22, Problem 15E
Nuts A company says its premium mixture of nuts contains 10% Brazil nuts, 20% cashews, 20% almonds, and 10% hazelnuts, and the rest are peanuts. You buy a large can and separate the various kinds of nuts. On weighing them, you find there are 112 grams of Brazil nuts, 183 grams of cashews, 207 grams of almonds, 71 grams of hazelnuts, and 446 grams of peanuts. You wonder whether your mix is significantly different from what the company advertises.
- a) Explain why the chi-square goodness-of-fit test is not an appropriate way to find out.
- b) What might you do instead of weighing the nuts in order to use a χ2 test?

A company produces four combinations of mixed vegetables that sell in 1-kg packages. Italian style combines 0,4 kg of zucchini, 0.3 of broccoli, and 0.3 of carrots. French style combines 0 3
kg of broccoli, 0.4 of carrots, and 0.3 of cauliflower. Oriental style combines 0.1 kg of zucchini, 0.3 of broccoli, 0.3 of carrots, and 0.3 of cauliflower. The Combo style combines 0.5 kg of
broccoli and 0.5 kg of cauliflower. The company has a stock of 13,200 kg of zucchini, 42,900 kg of broccoli, 29,400 kg of carrots, and 37,500 kg of cauliflower. How many packages of each
style should it prepare to use up existing supplies?
O A. w+0.3x + 0.3y + 0.5z = 42,900
0.4w + x+ 0.1y = 29,400
w + 0.3x + 0.3y + 0.5z = 37,500
w + 0.3x + 0.3y = 13,200
B. 0.3w + 0.3x + 0.3y + 0.5z = 42,900
0.3w + 0.4x + 0.3y = 29,400
0.3x + 0.3y + 0.5z = 37,500
0.4w + 0.1y = 13,200
O C. 0.3w+0.3x+0.3y + 0.4z = 29,400
0.3w + 0.4x +0.3y + 0.1z = 42,900
0.3w +0.3x + 0.5y = 13,200
O D. 0.3w + 0.3x + 0.3y + 0.5z = 42,900

- Cholesterol Cholesterol in human blood is necessary, but too much can lead to health problems. There are three main types of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoproteins), LDL (low-density lipoproteins), and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). HDL is considered “good” cholesterol; LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol. A standard fasting cholesterol blood test measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are used to estimate LDL and VLDL, which are difficult to measure directly. Your doctor recommends that your combined LDL/VLDL cholesterol level be less than 130 milligrams per deciliter, your HDL cholesterol level be at least 60 milligrams per deciliter, and your total cholesterol level be no more than 200 milligrams per deciliter. (a) Write a system of linear inequalities for the recommended cholesterol levels. Let x represent the HDL cholesterol level, and let y represent the combined LDL VLDL cholesterol level. (b) Graph the system of inequalities from part (a). Label any vertices of the solution region. (c) Is the following set of cholesterol levels within the recommendations? Explain. LDL/VLDL: 120 milligrams per deciliter HDL: 90 milligrams per deciliter Total: 210 milligrams per deciliter (d) Give an example of cholesterol levels in which the LDL/VLDL cholesterol level is too high but the HDL cholesterol level is acceptable. (e) Another recommendation is that the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol be less than 4 (that is, less than 4 to 1).
