A bacterium is a single yet complex living cell. It can live and multiply independently inside the body of the host it infects. A virus is small and is not a living cell. It grows and multiplies inside the host it infects using host machinery. This major difference makes viral diseases more difficult to cure than bacterial diseases for which antibiotics are available.
