The proteins, carbohydrate, and fat are the energy source in the diet. Before they are used to produce cellular energy, they break down into smaller subunits such as simple sugars, glycerol, fatty acids, and amino acids. The process by which these macromolecules are broken down into smaller molecules is known as catabolism. These biochemical pathways carried out the step-by-step oxidation process of sugar glucose, proteins, and fats. A small amount of energy is released at several points in the process of oxidation.
