Concept introduction:

Nature of bonding in a compound has to be described by the most familiar method molecular orbital theory.  The bond formation between atoms has to be clearly known by using this method.

Molecular orbital theory: The interaction between two atomic orbitals gives new bonding and anti-bonding orbitals.  These molecular orbital have energy gap, depending on energy gap these orbitals are closely spaced which is said to be band.

  • The closely spaced filled energy levels will make the valence band.
  • The upper half of the energy levels belongs to the empty, delocalized molecular orbitals. This set of closely spaced empty levels is said to be conduction band.
  • Depending on these valence band and the conduction band the mobility of electrons in an atoms can easily we can say.
