To determine:
The lymphatic organ that a doctor would be checking just below the rib cage, on the left side of a patient’s body who is suffering from mononucleosis and explain that why it would show enlargement along with the anatomy and histology of the organ.
Concept introduction:
The lymphatic system is a part of the circulatory system and immune system that have interconnected lymphatic vessels which contain a clear fluid called lymph. Lymphatic system comprises lymphatic capillaries, vessels, ducts, and trunks. The lymphatic system is also comprised of lymphatic tissues or organs like, tonsils, lymph nodes and nodules, spleen, and MALT. Tonsils function as filters in the body. They trap the foreign particles ingested in food or drink or inhaled through the air and protect the body against pathogens.

- make a concept map regarding the structural features of the lymphoid organs. You may include the following concepts or phrases that may connect with a proposition: parts, lymphatic nodule, cortex, medulla, medullary cords, central artery, periarterial lymphatic sheaths (PALS), red pulp, Billroth cords, Hassal's bodies, lining epithelium, etc.arrow_forwardWrite an essay identifying the two categories of lymphoid organs and their roles in the body's immune response. Explain the non-immune functions that the lymphatic system through the spleen and the lymphatic capillaries in the small intestines carry out. (Don't exceed 800 words.)arrow_forwardIt sometimes is difficult to distinguish the different lymphoid organs from one another in histological sections. How would you tell the thymus from a lymph node? (a) Only the thymus has a cortex and medulla; (b) lymphocytes are far less densely packed in the thymus than in the lymph node; (c) the thymus contains no blood vessels; (d) only the thymus has distinct lobules and thymic corpuscles.arrow_forward
- Sylvia’s grandfather is diagnosed with lung cancer. When his physician takes biopsies of several lymph nodes from neighboring regions of the body, Sylvia wonders why, since his cancer is in his lungs. What would you tell her?arrow_forwardMark the following statements as true or false. If a statement is false, correct it to make a true statement. a. Lymphatic vessels constitute a one-way system that delivers fluid from the blood vessels to the extracellular space. b. Lymph from the lower limbs drains into the right lymphatic duct. c. Fat-containing lymph from the intestines drains into the cisterna chyli. d. The thymus is the site of maturation of B cells. e. Why isn’t this a problem?arrow_forwardA 42-year-old woman presents with an enlarged supraclavicular lymph node. The patient is HIV positive and takes antiviral medications. A lymph node biopsy is shown in the image. The tumor cells express B cell antigens and are positive for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis?
