Concept explainers
Case summary:
In dilated cardiomyopathy of the left ventricle, the ventricle can become enormously enlarged.
Adequate information:
The muscular wall of the heart is known as myocardium. It helps in contraction and relaxation of the heart muscle the contraction of muscles results in pumping the blood out of the heart, whereas relaxation of muscle results in a refill of the chamber of the heart. The myocardium is composed of two membranes epicardium (outer membrane) and endocardium (inner membrane).
To determine:
The reason that leads to regurgitation of blood through the mitral valve during ventricular systole.
Given Information:
The cardiomyopathy of the left ventricle leads to regurgitation of blood and causes enlargement of the ventricle.

- The abnormal narrowing of the lumen of a vein is known as _____________________.arrow_forwardThe left AV valve has only two large leaflets, while the right AV valve has three smaller leaflets. It is a general principle of physiology that structure is a determinant of—and has coevolved with—function. Although it is unknown why the two valves differ in structure in this way, what difference in the functional demands of the left side of the heart might explain why there is one less valve leaflet than on the right side?arrow_forwardWhy is ventricular fibrillation such a serious arrhythmia?arrow_forward
- Define aortic valvearrow_forwardIn coronary bypass surgery, the internal thoracic artery can be used as the bypass vessel by suturing its distal end onto the obstructed coronary artery in the heart wall. Explain why using this vessel is superior to using the great saphenous vein of the leg.arrow_forwardYou are presented with a stack of ECGs on your fist day of your cardiology rotation and are given a single instruction: “read them”. As you progress through the pile, you note the following abnormalities.
