Chapter 20, Problem 4AL
Summary Introduction

Archaea are referred to as prokaryotic unicellular organisms. They are the third domain of life. Archaea are unique in the lipid composition of their membrane structures. Archaeal phospholipids comprised of the glycerol backbone, which is attached to a lipid chain originated from isoprene units. As a result, a branched hydrocarbon structure is formed. The hydrocarbon chains are attached to the glycerol backbone by means of an ether bond.
