Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation: The given reaction has to be balanced.
Concept Introduction:
Balanced equation:
- It is a chemical equation in which the number of each type of atoms will be equal in the stoichiometric ratios on both the sides of the equation.
- The concept of writing a balanced chemical equation is based on the law of conversion of mass
- According to the law of conversion of mass, in a
chemical reaction the mass of total amount of the product should be equal to the total mass of the reactants. - First write the reaction from the given information.
- Then count the number of atoms of each element in reactants as well as products.
- Insert some positive integers as coefficients of reactants as well as products in order to get the equal number of all elements on both sides of the equation.
(b)
Interpretation: The balanced reduction reaction of the zinc metal with the given complex ion has to be written.
The ionic form of the equation also need to written.
Concept Introduction:
Reduction: It is the reaction in which the electrons are added to a reactant species. So the oxidation number of the reactant decreases as the result of addition of electrons.
Oxidation: It is the reaction in which the electrons are removed from a reactant species. So the oxidation number of the reactant increases as the result of removal of electrons.
Oxidation number: It is the number assigned to a chemical element which indicates the number of electrons lost or gained by an atom of that element.
Reducing agent: The species which undergoes oxidation to reduce another species is known as the reducing agent.
(c)
Interpretation: The geometry and co-ordination number of the given complex ion has to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
Molecular geometry: The term molecular geometry refers to the 3-dimensional shape of the molecule by which the molecule is occupying in space with all its surrounding atoms or ions and/or lone pair of electrons.
Co-ordination number: The number of atoms or ions or molecules that are surrounding the central metal atom or ion in a complex is known as the co-ordination number.
