Concept explainers
Give an example of a vector quantity. Give an example of a scalar quantity.
The examples of a vector and a scalar quantity.
Answer to Problem 6A
Speed is a scalar quantity while velocity is a vector quantity.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
A scalar quantity just provides the magnitude however the vector quantity provides both the magnitude as well as direction.
Hence the simplest example of a scalar quantity will be “speed”. While determining the speed, we don’t need the direction of motion of the body. However, if there is a need to define velocity of the object, then we need to mention both its magnitude as well as its direction.
Conclusion:
Hence, speed is the simplest example of a scalar quantity while velocity is an example of a vector quantity.
