Significant figures are the number of digits in a value that contribute to the degree of accuracy of the value.
To count the significant figures the following rules are considered into account:
1) All non zero digits are significant.
Example: In 123.1 there are four significant figures.
2) Zeros between two nonzero digits are significant.
ex: In 102, there are three significant figures.
3) Leading zeros (left side zeros) are not significant.
ex: In 0.00245 there are three significant digits.
4) Zeros that are right side of a decimal are significant.
ex: In 0.00240 there are three significant figures.
5) Zeros that are right side of a number and without a decimal are not significant.
In 200 there is only one significant figure.
