Answer to Problem 37P

Rabbit spends 1200 s to run at a speed of 0.60m/sec.

Explanation of Solution

Write the expression for distance traveled at each time interval, in terms of velocity and time, and the v2 is zero because the rabbit is at rest.

  x1=v1Δt1x2=v2Δt2=0x3=v3Δt3        (I)

Write the expression for total distance,

  x=x1 +x2 +x3 =x1 +0+x3        (II)

Substitute expression (II) in expression (I),

  x=v1Δt1+v3Δt3        (III)

Write the expression for average velocity

  vave=ΔxΔtvave=xfxitfti        (IV)

Here, Δx is the distance, Δt is the time interval.

In expression (III) the initial position is zero at  x=0 at  t=0 so,can be re-written as,

  vave=xt        (V)

The expression for the total time, t, is the sum of each individual time interval,

  t=Δt1+Δt2+Δt3        (VI)

Substitute expression (V) in (VI), and solve for Δt1

  xvave=Δt1+Δt2+Δt3Δt1=xvaveΔt2Δt3        (VI)

Solve for Δt3 by substituting expression (VI) in (III)

  x=v1(xvaveΔt2Δt3)+v3Δt3x=v1xvavev1Δt2v1Δt3+v3Δt3v1Δt3v3Δt3=v1xvavev1Δt2xΔt3=v1xvavev1Δt2xv1v3

Conclusion:

Substitute the 1.5 m/s for v1, 1200 m for x, 0.80 m/s for vave, 10 s for Δt2, 0.60m/s for v3 values in the final expression of Δt3

  Δt3=(1.5 m/s)1200 m0.80 m/s(1.5m/s)(10 s)1200m1.5 m/s0.60m/s Δt3=1150s=1200 s
