The medical system of coding used to provide support for fee for service methods of payment are as follows: International classification of disease- It is a diagnostic tool in medicine which is used to monitor and classify the reason behind death and injury and keep a record of health analysis such as study on morbidity and mortality trends. This system is designed to endorse collection and reporting of health data at global level. Current procedural terminology- It involves formal classification of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures that are carried by health care providers and physicians, which is published in the annual revision of the American medical association since 1996. A five digit code is assigned to each procedure. The development of this system is done by health care finance administration for providing support to assign the reimbursement amount by Medicare carriers to the health care providers. Healthcare Common procedure coding system- It can be defined as code system which is standardized in nature and essential for submission of health care claims by the medical providers to the health insurances and Medicare program in an orderly and consistent manner. There are two medical code set under HCPCS viz. level 1 and level 2.
