(a)
Interpretation: The third-row elements in the periodic table are to be classified as a metal, a metalloid or a nonmetal.
Concept introduction: There are a group of eight elements in the third-row namely, sodium in alkali metal group, magnesium in alkaline earth metal group, aluminum in the boron group, silicon in carbon family, phosphorus in nitrogen family, sulphur in the oxygen family, chlorine in halogen group and argon in inert gas group. There is a change in the properties of elements gradually on going from metallic to non-metallic across the third period. The elements should be a good conductor of heat and electricity and be ductile and malleable; these are the conditions for the elements to be metals.
