Interpretation:
Thomson's model of the atom and the way it might account for the production of cathode rays are to be determined.
Concept introduction:
Atoms are small particles of which all the matter is made up of. Atoms combine to form molecules and compounds. Atoms are composed of smaller sub-atomic particles namely, protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons are positively charged sub-atomic particles whereas neutrons are neutral species. Protons and neutrons together form the small and densely packed central region called the nucleus of the atom. Electrons are negatively charged particles which revolve around the nucleus. Since the total number of protons and electrons in an atom is equal, therefore an atom as a whole is neutral.
