(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The mass of Benzoic acid to prepare 250mlof 100.0 mM aqueous solution should be calculated.

Mass of the solute in molar solution:

The preparation of known concentration solution done by the calculated mass of solute is dissolved in required value solution.

The mass of the solute is calculated by using below equation,

Mass of solute (g)=Molecular weight [g/mol]×Concentrations [mol/L]×Volume [L]

Answer to Problem 2.23P

The mass of Benzoic acid to prepare 250mLof 100.0 mM aqueous solution is 3.053g .

Explanation of Solution

To calculate the mass of Benzoic acid to prepare 250mLof 100.0 mM aqueous solution.

Given,

Molar mas of Benzoic acid is 122. 12g

Density of Benzoic acid is 1.27 g/mL

The concentration to be prepare 100.0mM

MassofC6H5COOH=122.12g×0.1M×0.250L=3.053g

The mass of Benzoic acid to 250mlof 100.0 mM aqueous solution is 3.053g

Hence, 3.053g of Benzoic acid is dissolved in 250mL water to give 250mlof 100.0 mM aqueous solution.

Conclusion

The mass of Benzoic acid to prepare 250mlof 100.0 mM aqueous solution was calculated.

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The true mass of Benzoic acid should be calculated.

Concept introduction:

Buoyancy Correction:

The weight of the object in air is less then weight of the object in vacuum because of buoyancy, this weight variation is corrected using Buoyancy equation it is,

m=m'(1-dadw)(1-dad)

Where,

m is mass of object in vacuum.

m' is mass of object in air (read on a balance).

da is the density of air (0.001 2 g/mL near I bar and 25°C) .

dw is the density of calibration weights (8.0 g/mL) .

d is the density of the object being weighed.

Answer to Problem 2.23P

The true mass of Benzoic acid is 3.0554g

Explanation of Solution

To calculate the true mass of Benzoic acid.

Given,

The density of Benzoic acid near 25°C is 1.27 g/mL

Benzoic acid mass in air is 3.053g

Air density is 0.0012 g/mL

m=(3.053 g)(1-0.0012g/mL8.0g/mL)(1-0.0012g/mL1.27 g/mL)=3.0554g

The give values are plugged in above equation to give a true mass of Benzoic acid.

The true mass of Benzoic acid is 3.0554g

Conclusion

The true mass of Benzoic acid was calculated.

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The preparation of 50.0 μM Benzoic acid solution by serial dilution method should be explained.

Concept introduction:

Serial dilation:

Serial dilation is the process, which is used to prepare a very low concentration solutions from high concentration solutions by continues step dilution method.

The Serial dilation is carried out by using volumetric principle.

MiniVini=MfnlVfnl

Where,

Mini is initial concentration.

Vini is initial volume.

Mfnl is final concentration.

Vfnl is final volume.

Answer to Problem 2.23P

30.53g of benzoic acid is dissolved in 1000ml volumetric flask with water then pipet 5 mL of this stock solution into 500 mL volumetric flask to give  2.5mM of benzoic acid solution, After pipet 5 mL of 2.5mM benzoic acid solution and transfer into 250 mL volumetric flask with water to give a 50.0 μM solution.

Explanation of Solution

To explain the preparation of 50.0 μM Benzoic acid solution by serial dilution method.

Stock solution preparation:

Molar mas of Benzoic acid is 122. 12g

The concentration to be prepare 100.0mM

MassofC6H5COOH=122.12g×0.25M×1L=30.53g

The mass of Benzoic acid to 1 literof 500.0 mM aqueous solution is 30.53g

Hence, 30.53g of Benzoic acid is dissolved in 1000 mL flask with water to give 1000mlof 0.25M aqueous solution.

First dilution:

=0.25M×5500mL=0.0025M=2.5mM

5 mL of stock solution is diluted in 500 mL volumetric flask with water give a 2.5mM solution.

Second dilution:

=0.0025M×5250mL=0.00005M=5μM

5 mL of first dilution solution is diluted in 250 mL volumetric flask with water give a 5μM solution.

Conclusion

The preparation of 50.0 μM Benzoic acid solution by serial dilution method was explained.

Identifying the major species in weak acid or weak base equilibria Your answer is incorrect. • Row 2: Your answer is incorrect. • Row 3: Your answer is incorrect. • Row 6: Your answer is incorrect. 0/5 The preparations of two aqueous solutions are described in the table below. For each solution, write the chemical formulas of the major species present at equilibrium. You can leave out water itself. Write the chemical formulas of the species that will act as acids in the 'acids' row, the formulas of the species that will act as bases in the 'bases' row, and the formulas of the species that will act as neither acids nor bases in the 'other' row. You will find it useful to keep in mind that HF is a weak acid. acids: HF 0.1 mol of NaOH is added to 1.0 L of a 0.7M HF solution. bases: 0.13 mol of HCl is added to 1.0 L of a solution that is 1.0M in both HF and KF.
