Concept explainers
To predict: The effect of slow and shallow respirations, slow circulation, and reduced oxygen levels that affect the partial pressure of carbon dioxide and how this affects the serum pH.
Concept introduction: Slow and shallow respirations cause hypoventilation. They are caused either due to trauma or due to respiratory diseases. Slow and shallow respirations affect the inspiration of oxygen and expiration of carbon dioxide. The partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the blood is denoted as PCO2. The optimum range is 35 to 45 mmHg. The pH of the blood serum should be maintained within the optimum range of 7.35 to 7.45. If the serum pH is not within the range, it indicates the acid-base imbalance.
