Summary Introduction

To determine: The reason why ADLs and IADLs are important to the kinesiologists who deal with elderly and disabled people.

Introduction: Self-sufficiency is one of the important spheres of physical activities. Personal comfort and self-sufficiency are the activities that may not be necessary for the survival of an individual such as ironing the clothes, cleaning a home, washing dishes, and driving a car. Some physical and occupational therapists help people with physical disabilities and diseases to fulfill these important tasks of life.

Explanation of Solution

Activities of daily living (ADLs) include improvising personal behavior such as getting dressed, using the toilets, walking, and eating. Physically disabled and elderly people might have difficulty in doing the routine tasks such as walking, dressing, and eating. Therefore, the kinesiologist who works with such people must learn about ADLs to help the physically disabled and elderly people.

Instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) include activities such as shopping, telephoning, laundry, and cooking. IADL activities are physically more demanding. Disabled and elderly aged people might have less stamina to do such activities. Therefore, the professional kinesiologists who deal with disabled and elderly people must be aware of the IADLs.
