Summary Introduction

Introduction

Media influences people's perceptions of issues by framing the issue in a way they want the audience to learn about it. Framing of information can also be thought of how the information is presented. For example, if a media outlet has ties to a company that produces food, they may want to present the information about that company, or its food, in a positive way.

Corporations are the largest producers of food in the United States. This issue has two different sides with conflicting messages from the media on each. Depending on the media source, the message may be favorable or unfavorable. Some things that the media may say are that large companies are well established, trustworthy, monitored closely by regulators, have established production methods, efficient, inexpensive to buy, offer better value, etc. On the other hand, a different section of the media may report the opposite, arguing large companies are polluters, use unfair labor practices, care only about profits, offer poor quality foods with less nutritional value, advertise to children, etc. Consider the source of the reporting and what possible spin they may put on the report to meet a potential agenda. For example, the media source may also be owed by a company that manufactures the food being reported on. Or they may be an independent media source with an audience more favorable to reports incriminating a large food producer.
