The processes of “upliftment, weathering, erosion, and deposition” marked in the rock cycle take sediment from all types of rock to the surface of Earth. Lithification transforms these sediments to sedimentary rock. Hence, it can be said that sedimentary rocks are the most abundant rock type on Earth’s surface.

Explanation of Solution

On studying the rock cycle, it can be understood that all types of rocks may get uplifted, may undergo erosion and weathering followed by deposition again. They will be in the form of sediments during that stage.

Such sediments may gradually get compacted and cemented and the process is called lithification where they turn into a sedimentary rock. Hence, there are more chances for the development of sedimentary rocks. Therefore, the sedimentary rocks will be the most abundant rock type on the surface of Earth.
