Explanation of Solution

The NSPE (National Society of Professional Engineers) defines sustainability as “the challenge of satisfying human needs related to industrial products, natural resources, food, energy, shelter, transportation, and effective management of waste, and also conserve and protect environment quality and natural resources base necessary for future development.

According to NSPE, sustainability is characterized by integration of development and conservation as well as satisfying basic human needs.

The philosophy of sustainability mainly depends upon the conservation of the available resources. In the case of civil engineering, sustainability is referred to as the conservation of construction material in an environment-friendly manner.

In construction projects such as roads, buildings, and sewage treatment plant, the design and construction should be done in such a way that its impact on the environment is minimum and it also reduces global warming.
