Chapter 2, Problem 1CQ

An insect inside a bus flies from the back toward the front at 5.0 mi/h. The bus is moving in a straight line at 50.0 mi/h. What is the speed of the insect?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

The speed of the insect relative to the ground.

Answer to Problem 1CQ

The speed of the insect relative to the ground is 55mi/h.

Explanation of Solution

Write the expression for relative speed.

    vig=vib+vbg                                                     (I)

Here, vig is the speed of insect relative to the ground, vib is the speed of the insect relative to the bus and vbg is the speed of the bus relative to the ground.

Conclusion:

Substitute 5.0mi/h for vib and 50.0mi/h for vbg in equation (I) to find vig.

    vig=5.0mi/h+50.0mi/h=55.0mi/h

Therefore, the speed of the insect relative to the ground is 55.0mi/h.

A cat is sleeping on the floor in the middle of a 3.0 m wide room when a barking dog enters with a speed of 1.50 m/s. As the dog enters, the cat immediately accelerates at 0.85 m/s2 toward an open window on the opposite side of the room. The hare is confident that they can win, so first do 1000 meters at 5 m/s turns around and sees the hare and so stops and falls asleep for 10 mins. The hare wakes up and then sees the tortoise too close so speeds up again at 5m/s for another 500 meters after which the Hare again decides to sleep for 5 mins being so are in front. The Hare wakes up and sees the Tortoise! He dashes for the finish another 500 meters away at 8 m/s. To no avail as the story goes. By how much did the Tortoise win?
