Solution: To obtain a string of 35 successive races where at least 30 times one of the inner position is allocated, thousand one-digit random numbers from 1 to 9 are chosen from the random number table and record how many times the number 1, 2, and 3 are occurring in a row for 1000 times.

Explanation of Solution

There are nine horses in the race and the probability of getting one of the three inside position is one-in-three. Each races is independent, that is, the outcome of one race does not affect the other. To simulate 1000 races, first numbers are assigned to the outcome of each race.

As each race has nine horses, there must be nine outcomes possible for each race. The horses are labeled as 1,2,,9. The horse that is numbered as the same number of the chosen random number will indicate the outcome of one race. The random number table is used to obtain to choose the random number.

As the probability of getting one of the inside positions is 1/3, it can be decided that if the outcome of the race is the random number 1, 2, and 3, then the race will get one of the three inner positions. Thousand one-digit random numbers from 1 to 9 are chosen from the random number table. Record how many times the number 1, 2, and 3 are occurred in a row. Repeat the process 1000 times to obtain a string of 35 successive races where at least 30 times one of the inner position is allocated.
