Summary Introduction

Introduction

One unintended consequence of urbanization is trapping people in a cycle of poverty. Many migrants cannot afford adequate housing and live in slums and shantytowns. Living in these conditions makes it harder for the poor to climb out of poverty, which worsens economic inequality. A large number of people are also unemployed. Racial inequality is exacerbated because people in outgroups are the most likely to be forced to live on the fringes of the city in slums and ghettos.
